Kavita Seth Shoots From The Hip: Solo Composer Albums Outdo Multi Composer Ones
Kavita Seth talks about why her songs are not too many, why she loves recreations, and why she prefers solo composer albums
Famous for her songs like Iktara from Wake Up Sid (2009) and Tum Hi Ho Bandhu from Cocktail (2012), singer Kavita Seth last composed an emotional number Aisi Hoti Hai Maa for the Raveena Tandon starrer Maatr.
In this interview, she talks about her latest song, the recent trends of recreations and lots more.
First of all tell us about your Aisi Hoti Hai Maa song in Maatra.
The song Aisi Hoti Hai Maa was sung and composed by me. A few years ago, I was working on Amrita Pritamji’s project and someone made me read these lines in the studio.
Since then I wanted to incorporate it in one of my projects and the next day itself I composed the track.
Meanwhile, the producer of Maatr, Anjum Rizvi, called me up to sing a song for the film. I went to dub the track and he explained to me a situation. I told him I had something that would match the situation and sent him the song. Guess what! It immediately got approved.

Any specific reason for your songs releasing after gaps?
Ho jaata hai interval (laughs). I am ready to work--- but good things take time I guess.
I think I am a bit too choosy about the poetry of the track and the songs I croon. Like the song Jeete Hai Chal from Neerja which has such a good message, I would give my right arm for it. The song might not have been a massive success but it does have a long shelf life.
So, there have been times that a composer has approached you and you refused to sing?
Yes, that has happened quite a lot of times. I do feel bad about it. But by now, people approach me for only those songs which have good lyrics.
Sorry, but can you talk about the time when your husband passed away?
It was quite a difficult phase but I followed my husband’s advice of moving on and not sticking in the past. He would always encourage me to look forward in life, which is why I didn’t even cancel any of my shows after he passed away.

Any upcoming projects?
Nothing specific as such. However, I am working on a few singles which will release soon.
What do you think about recreations?
I think it is a very good concept. Because what happens is, many people from the present generation have not heard many old songs. By recreating an old song, you are popularising it. So if the youngsters can relate to the newer version. they will automatically go and hear the old song. However, when you recreate a track, one should be very careful to retain the soul of the track.

Many actors are now turning singers. What do you think about the trend?
There is a Hindi proverb 'Jaako kaam tako saje'. There’s no harm trying a couple of songs here and there but the people who master in music/singing only should try their hands at singing.
What do you think about the concept of multi-composers?
I think the concept of multi-composers kills the essence of music. A solo composer is actually living the project and knows the script in and out. This helps him give you a better output. When you present a film with multi-composers to the audiences, you realise your work looks very patchy. There is no connect and the songs actually do not take the story forward.
Solo composer albums have outdone multi composer ones. Didn't that happen last year too?
